The network diagnostic tool for use in determining the position of a workstation (14) on a LAN in which there are timer (20) and echo (22) stations at each end of a multi access bus (12). Signals from the LAN workstations propagate in both directions along the bus. By measuring the time delay between receipt of a packet and its echo at the timer station, the position of the workstation (14) along a bus can be determined.
